What a wafer cannot report

People write to ask whether the society believes a solar cell has an inner life. The working answer is no. Belief is not the instrument.

Polysilicon can be weighed, doped, etched, and probed. It cannot be interviewed. When a sentence on this site cannot be tied to a measurement, or to a speculation that is clearly marked, it does not belong in the research notes. Speculation is allowed in the monthly letter and on the events page, and it is labeled there.

The word consciousness stays in the name as a goad. It is the claim the desk is trying to make difficult.
