Field note
Thermal budgets and the loss of pattern
A thermal budget is the heat a film is allowed to see. Heat lets atoms move. Atoms that move rearrange a grain boundary, and a rearranged boundary does not owe anyone the charge pattern it held before.
Any note in this journal that talks about persistence has to name a temperature. A pattern that vanishes in a routine anneal was a defect population, not a record. That is a useful negative result, and negative results will be published here.
The November bench uses scrap photovoltaic cells, a hot plate with a known ceiling, and a capacitance meter. The point is not to awaken a wafer. The point is to watch a number move, and to say in public what the number is not.
